Why such abuse of women in Pakistan?

I guess its embedded in their culture, its something that has gone on for generations. They are seen as second cl citizen, it will be very hard to change mentalities as people often firmly believe that whatever their ancestors used to do is the right thing, even if it is morally wrong.
