Why has no one ever heard of Dorian Gray?

Am I the only person on this planet who has ever heard of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde? If I'm not imagining things, I think it was made into a movie in the 1940's and starred Angela Lansbury. Even the literature professors at my college have never heard of it. Did the story ever really exist or am I just mistaken?
