Do high school students get forced to read MADAME BOVARY (by G. Flaubert)?

This was the plot central point as far as the white suburban teenage boy who is the host for the EXCHANGE student from Pakistan (CW: Aliens in America) in last night's rerun - - I did read it in College French cl and we watched just an edited part of the filmed version of it. . .It was funny for the episode that then the non-reader sister wanted to get PRIDE & PREJUDICE by Jane Austen banned as well (the ditzy mom then on a crusade to ban books went along) . . .
